Netaji Subhas Open University (NSOU) Netaji Subhas Open University (NSOU) Netaji Subhas Open University (NSOU) is the premier State Open University in India. Established by W.B. Act (XIX) of 1997 and Recognised by U.G.C. At present, The University is continuing its work with 142 Study Centres. In near future more Study Centres will be opened with thrust on "meeting the unmet" particularly the disadvantaged sector of the rural community & minority with application of IT. The Study Centres of the University, which have already been opened and are on the anvil of opening will also provide for widening the scope of several vocational , professional & Online courses in addition to its existing courses upto M.Phil & Ph.D. levels. At present, The University is continuing its work with 142 Study Centres. At present the University functions from four campuses situated at four crucial points in the Kolkata and its developing Electronics Complex in Saltlake. The University is developing a 15-acre green eco-friendly integrated campus at Kalyani to accommodate the fast proliferating NSOU family. Under the flagship guidance of Professor (Dr.) Surabhi Banerjee, Hon'ble vice-Chancellor, NSOU , the University has been experiencing exponential growth in several dimensions--- the number of Study Centres has escalated to a height of as much as 142, several subjects of studies have been added to its list of courses launched. The University is actually aiming to attain the status of e-University in near future with its projected enrollment of 1 Lakh of learners by the tenth plan period as against the present enrolment of nearly 65,000. Indira Gandhi National Open University Indira Gandhi National Open University was established in 1985 to democratise higher education. The aim was to provide cost-effective, quality education to large sections of our population including those living in remote and farflung areas. A mere fifteen years since its inception IGNOU has carved a niche for itself among the premier educational institutions in the country. The University has been a pioneer in Distance Education and the recipient of the Centre of Excellence in Distance Education award conferred by the Commonwealth of Learning in 1993. IGNOU has about 14,33,490 students with extremely varied profiles, spread throughout the length and breadth of the country. The University has an efficient and effective networking of 58 Regional Centres (25 are IGNOU Regional Centres, 8 are IGNOU North-East Regional Centres, 5 are Army Command Centres, 8 are IAF Command Centres, 4 are Navy Command Centres, 1 is for Assam Rifles Command Centre and 7 are CRPF Centres), 6 Sub-Regional Centres and over 1409 Study Centres, all over India. As an Open University, IGNOU has come a long way since 1985, having crossed national boundaries providing higher education as well as assisting other developing countries in this regard. State-of-the-art telecommunication systems have further helped in reaching out to the hitherto unreached sections of the society. National Board of Examinations (Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India) The National Board of Examinations was established in 1975 with the primary objective of improving the quality of medical education by elevating the level and establishing standards of postgraduate examinations in Modern Medicine on an all India basis. It was to function as a national resource of imparting quality in evaluation of professional competence in Medical Sciences. There are more than 120 recognized Medical Colleges in the country in addition to over 130 Board accredited institutions imparting medical education at various levels and in various specialties and super specialties. There are 33 medical disciplines identified by the Board for which approved training facilities are available in the country at present. The Medical Council of India has laid down standards of postgraduate examinations conducted by various universities and other institutions. It is felt that the levels of proficiency and standards of evaluation vary considerably in these institutions and universities. The setting up of a national body to conduct postgraduate medical examination was intended to provide a common measurement standard and mechanism of evaluation of the minimum level of attainment of the objective for which postgraduate degree courses were started in medical institutions. Inter-country and international comparisons will be facilitated with the availability of commonly accepted evaluation mechanism.
